Ive always loved animals, as a kid I had cats and we had dogs outside. As a child I’d spend much of my time playing in the woods. I would nurture injured wild animals I’d find, I had a squirrel I tamed that I took everywhere, even to school. I read animal encyclopedias, I was an artist of many mediums and a poet, specializing in oil painting from the age of 8. I have always connected better with animals. When I was 12 a strange dog showed up in our yard, but our golden retriever seemed so happy with this dog, but he was skinny so I put some food out for her new friend. I didn’t know this but it is something I teach my kids now, I was squatted down near the bowl and our dog growled at him - he snapped at her and he bit me in the face. He was a friendly black lab & he was hungry, but he was euthanized for his actions.
I got 9 stitches to sew my right eye lid back together, no damage to my eye. Two months later our standard AKC Golden Retriever gave birth to 12 solid black puppies.
Turns out the dog who sired the litter was in a house where his owner had passed away & he was there for days (at minimum) before anyone came to check on her, without any food. It can happen to anyone, any child, accidentally because accidents happen.
I wanted a family companion, with less risk for this kind of error. It was not the dogs fault, but I didn’t want my young children to suffer the consequences of an accident like mine, I was lucky & I know some people arent as lucky. Disclaimer It is critical that children are taught how to respect animals, to be gentle with them, around them, and that they need their space. Children’s time with animals need to be closely supervised, for the safety of both the animal and the child.
Upon loads and loads of breed research,
I found the pug.
I asked a groomer friend, and I messaged people online asking about the breed - based on their personal experience. Finally I got to meet some, I met my first grumble & if you don’t know what a grumble is, it’s a group of 3 or more pugs. There was 8 and it was like meeting a tiny circus, I immediately fell in love. They were all so friendly and happy. To me that sealed the deal, this is and will be my life’s work, to better the health for the future of the pug breed.
